Do you know how many apps are in the Android app store? More than 16.5 million and that total continues to increase at lightning speed.

The easiest and most common route to selling your apps is to pay $25 to get listed on world’s largest app store: Google Play.

But consider this: there are many alternative app stores that yield better revenue plans and less competition. Your app then has the potential to become a big fish in a small pond. Let’s check out some of the alternatives.

1. Amazon Appstore

The Amazon Appstore currently contains more than 240,000 apps and has a fantastic ‘Free app of the day’ feature. It opened up its doors in 2011 and is currently available in more than 200 countries.

Instead of receiving money from users, you’re getting paid by Amazon. That is the best benefit of this app store.

2. Samsung Galaxy Apps

The Samsung Apps Mobile store is a leading contender for an alternative Google Play store. The only downfall is that there are only 35,000 apps in it. Samsung pays attention to the quality of its apps and has a strict verification process that inspects apps for malware and device-compatibility.

3. Soc.io Mall

Soc.io has less than 10,000 apps but the good thing is that marketplace isn’t limited to apps — users can also buy games, eBooks, audiobooks, videos and music. It offers a high revenue share: 80/20 and, in addition, listing your app is free. The number of active users isn’t as high as other app stores but the store includes a few major app store players including Twitter, Cut the Rope, and Draw Something.

4. F-droid

F-droid contains only free and open source apps. Apps that include paid add-ons are also allowed. Users can conveniently download apps from the official F-droid app or from the official website. The best thing about it is that any F-droid app is automatically updated once it is installed through F-droid. All F-droid apps must have an Apache or GNU open source license.

5. Opera Mobile Store

With 300,000 mobile apps for more than 7,500 phone models, The Opera Mobile Store is a popular alternative among Android users. Developers receive 70 percent royalties here and the store receives more than 100 million visitors per month and monolithic two million apps downloaded per day. Registration for your app is free. It is available in more than 250 countries.

6. LG Smart World

The third top Smartphone vendor, LG Smart World is another OEM-based app store. LG is no Samsung, of course, but it has made a tremendous profit with a whopping 108.6 percent increase in quarter two of 2015 and picked up a 7.1 percent global Smartphone market share.

7. SlideMe Market

One of the oldest Android app marketplaces, even older than Google Play, SlideMe charges 20 percent to list the applications. The SlideMe Market is the best known when it comes to alternate and independent Android app stores. SlideMe’s store has just 21,614 apps available (at the time of writing this).

8. AppBrain

There are 50,000 people using the SDK to monetize their apps. AppBrain has a pay-per-install system for Android apps and their developers. The platform will also suggest actions on when and how to find weak points in your app.

9. Mobango

Mobango is an alternative market that mostly features Android, Symbian, Java, Windows and BlackBerry with a limited selection of apps. The store lets users create and share a wide variety of mobile content. Developers can not only publish their apps but also publish games for free. Users can even send apps to their device through SMS or e-mail, this is one of the unique features of this app store.

Putting your Android app for sale on all these alternative platforms may result in more downloads than you’d get on Google Play, so it’s definitely worth a try.
